Online social net\u00adworks (OSN<\/span>) have attrac\u00adted bil\u00adlions of users. This enor\u00admous suc\u00adcess is not without pro\u00adblems, thou\u00adgh; the cen\u00adtra\u00adli\u00adzed archi\u00adtec\u00adtu\u00adres of OSNs, sto\u00adring the users\u2019 per\u00adso\u00adnal data, pro\u00advi\u00addes ample oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty to pri\u00adva\u00adcy vio\u00adla\u00adtion. Starting in 2011, Giuliano Mega, Gian Pietro Picco and I have star\u00adted to inve\u00adsti\u00adga\u00adte alter\u00adna\u00adti\u00adve approa\u00adches, based on open, decen\u00adtra\u00adli\u00adzed alternatives.<\/p>\n

We tac\u00adkled the fol\u00adlo\u00adwing research que\u00adstion: is it pos\u00adsi\u00adble to build a decen\u00adtra\u00adli\u00adzed OSN<\/span> over a social over\u00adlay<\/span>, i.e., an over\u00adlay net\u00adwork who\u00adse links among nodes mir\u00adror <\/span>the social net\u00adwork rela\u00adtion\u00adships among the nodes\u2019 owners<\/em>? We fir\u00adst stu\u00addied whe\u00adther  one fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal pie\u00adce of OSN<\/span> (the dis\u00adse\u00admi\u00adna\u00adtion of pro\u00adfi\u00adle upda\u00adtes) can be imple\u00admen\u00adted in a decen\u00adtra\u00adli\u00adzed way [P2P11<\/span><\/a>]<\/span>. We later inve\u00adsti\u00adga\u00adted the effec\u00adts of churn and fai\u00adlu\u00adres on the avai\u00adla\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty of such pro\u00adfi\u00adles [P2P12<\/span><\/a>]. We final\u00adly eva\u00adlua\u00adted whe\u00adther an hybrid approach based on both peer-to-peer and cloud ser\u00advi\u00adces could pro\u00advi\u00adde both pri\u00adva\u00adcy and per\u00adfor\u00adman\u00adce [P2P13<\/span><\/a>]; the answer was posi\u00adti\u00adve. Apart from his Ph.D. the\u00adsis, the work of Giuliano is sum\u00adma\u00adri\u00adzed in a 2019 paper publi\u00adshed in IEEE<\/span> Transactions of Network Science and Engineering [TNSE19<\/span><\/a>].<\/p>\n
