Peer-to-peer (P2P<\/span>) and cloud com\u00adpu\u00adting, two major Internet trends of the last deca\u00adde, hold simi\u00adlar pro\u00admi\u00adses: the (vir\u00adtual\u00adly) unli\u00admi\u00adted avai\u00adla\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty of com\u00adpu\u00adting and sto\u00adra\u00adge resour\u00adces. However, impor\u00adtant dif\u00adfe\u00adren\u00adces exi\u00adst: the cloud pro\u00advi\u00addes highly avai\u00adla\u00adble resour\u00adces, but at a mone\u00adta\u00adry cost; P2P<\/span> resour\u00adces are avai\u00adla\u00adble at no cost, but their avai\u00adla\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty is affec\u00adted by churn.<\/p>\n

Together with Luca Abeni, Hannah Kavalionak, and Benedikt Elser, we inve\u00adsti\u00adga\u00adted a novel approach to con\u00adstruc\u00adting depen\u00adda\u00adble appli\u00adca\u00adtions by leve\u00adra\u00adging the cloud to ensu\u00adre highly avai\u00adla\u00adble and dura\u00adble ser\u00advi\u00adces, whi\u00adle exploi\u00adting P2P<\/span> resour\u00adces whe\u00adne\u00adver they are avai\u00adla\u00adble. The novel\u00adty of our pro\u00adpo\u00adsal lies in the inte\u00adgra\u00adtion of the gos\u00adsip para\u00addigm with a sto\u00adra\u00adge cloud, which ena\u00adbles the mone\u00adta\u00adry cost of the cloud to be kept under control\u2014whether in the pre\u00adsen\u00adce of a sin\u00adgle peer or of mil\u00adlions. These ideas were fir\u00adst pre\u00adsen\u00adted in Kyoto at [P2P11<\/span><\/a><\/span>] and later exten\u00added in [IWSOS12<\/span><\/a><\/span>]. We sub\u00adse\u00adquen\u00adtly applied them to mas\u00adsi\u00adve\u00adly mul\u00adtiu\u00adser onli\u00adne games, in col\u00adla\u00adbo\u00adra\u00adtion with the University of Pisa [PPNA15<\/span><\/a>], and to the pro\u00adblem of NAT<\/span> tra\u00adver\u00adsal [SAC16<\/span><\/a>].<\/p>\n
