My per\u00adfor\u00adman\u00adce is not great, but it\u2019s fun and you get the pos\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty to run in pla\u00adces that are nor\u00admal\u00adly pre\u00adclu\u00added due to the traf\u00adfic. So far, my best run\u00adning times are: Verona Half Marathon (1h 48\u2032 01\u2033) and Venice Marathon (4h&nbsp;12\u2032).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=http:%2F%2Fdisi.unitn.it%2F~montreso%2Fkml%2Fstraverona-2011.kml&amp;aq=&amp;sll=59.395201,17.956517&amp;sspn=0.044397,0.136986&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;t=h&amp;z=16\">StraVerona Half Marathon by Night<\/a>, May 14th, 2011. 21.097 km (21.9 on the Garmin). The fir\u00adst and pro\u00adba\u00adbly the last! An orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtio\u00adnal disa\u00adster; the top-10 run\u00adner run around 20km\u2026 ano\u00adther group of 30 run around 22km; the big group run 21.7km (esti\u00adma\u00adte). How this was pos\u00adsi\u00adble? I still don\u2019t under\u00adstand\u2026 any\u00adway, for someo\u00adne who has no hope to win it was fun anyway.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.it\/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=it&amp;geocode=&amp;q=http:%2F%2Fwww.disi.unitn.it%2F~montreso%2Fkml%2Fgarda-marathon.kml&amp;sll=45.452246,11.003236&amp;sspn=0.013653,0.031414&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;z=12\">Lake Garda Marathon<\/a>, October 10th, 2010, 42.195km. The date of the race was 10.10.10. Read as a bina\u00adry num\u00adber, \u201c101010\u201d is equal to 42. This num\u00adber is the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe, and Everything (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/d39QB6\">http:\/\/bit.ly\/d39QB6<\/a>). So, I run 42+ Km at the Garda Lake Marathon. I did not set my record, becau\u00adse my tem\u00adpe\u00adra\u00adtu\u00adre on Friday was 38\u00b0C (luc\u00adki\u00adly, it wasn\u2019t\u2026 42\u00b0C). But guys, it was worth eve\u00adry pain\u00adful meter \u2014 what a a beau\u00adti\u00adful day! <span class=\"caps\">PS<\/span> If you think I\u2019m cra\u00adzy, listen to this: around km 35, I was loo\u00adking down at my shoes and thin\u00adking: \u201cthis guy has the same shoes as&nbsp;me\u201d\u2026<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=http:%2F%2Fwww.disi.unitn.it%2F~montreso%2Fkml%2Fmezzaverona.kml&amp;sll=45.897171,10.864475&amp;sspn=0.060271,0.141964&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;z=14\">Verona Half Marathon<\/a>, February 21st, 2010 and February 20th, 2011. 21.097 km (21.6 on the Garmin). In 2010, I com\u00adple\u00adted it in 1h 52\u2032 54\u2033, I was sup\u00adpo\u00adsed to impro\u00adve my time, but the day befo\u00adre the race I had the fever (38\u00b0 C) and a sore throat, so I think it is a good result any\u00adway. In 2011, I actual\u00adly impro\u00adved my record: 1h 48\u2032&nbsp;01\u2033.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=http:%2F%2Fwww.disi.unitn.it%2F~montreso%2Fkml%2Friva.kml&amp;sll=40.040775,4.155155&amp;sspn=0.033151,0.070982&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;z=14\">Garda Trentino Half Marathon<\/a>, November 15th, 2009 and November 14th, 2010. 21.097 km (21.6 on the Garmin). Among my best times in a half-mara\u00adthon \u2014 1h 49\u2032 17\u2033 in 2009, 1h 48\u2032 46\u2033 in&nbsp;2010.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonmarathon.org\/HalfMarathon\/2009%20HM%20Course%20Map.pdf\">Boston Half-Marathon<\/a>, October 11th, 2009. Well, the Garmin was under repair, so I\u2019m lin\u00adking the offi\u00adcial map here. And I did not actual\u00adly sub\u00adscri\u00adbe to the race, becau\u00adse when I noti\u00adced the coin\u00adci\u00adden\u00adce \u2014 being in Boston the day of the half-mara\u00adthon \u2014 sub\u00adscrib\u00adtions were alrea\u00addy clo\u00adsed. So I just joi\u00adned the run\u00adners, and did a decent time: 1h 52\u2032 19\u2033. Something to remem\u00adber, apart from the beau\u00adti\u00adful Boston sur\u00adroun\u00addings: the ham\u00adbur\u00adgher at the end! In Italy, we just get bana\u00adnas and cookies\u2026<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=http:%2F%2Fwww.disi.unitn.it%2F~montreso%2Fkml%2Fdreiviertel.kml&amp;sll=-29.387615,-50.875326&amp;sspn=0.018865,0.035491&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;z=12\">Pustertaler Drei Viertel Halb-mara\u00adthon<\/a>, August 30th, 2009, 17.75km. This race runs from Brunico to Campo Tures in the Alto-Adige region, whe\u00adre I have my vaca\u00adtions. The ger\u00adman name means \u201c3\/4 half-mara\u00adthon\u201d, or 17.6 km (the Garmin always reports 1\u20132% more). 1h 32\u2032 30\u2033, qui\u00adte a rela\u00adxed pace. I was expec\u00adting public trans\u00adport to reach Brunico in the mor\u00adning, but they did not actual\u00adly expect any\u00adbo\u00addy using it, so the\u00adre was nothing\u2026 I was luc\u00adky to reach the star\u00adting line hitch\u00adhi\u00adking on a firewor\u00adker&nbsp;jeep.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=http:%2F%2Fwww.disi.unitn.it%2F~montreso%2Fkml%2Fvenezia.kml&amp;sll=45.463165,10.996739&amp;sspn=0.121481,0.283928&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;z=12\">Venice mara\u00adthon<\/a>, October 26th, 2008, 42.195km. This a clas\u00adsic mara\u00adthon in Italy, famous for the last kilo\u00adme\u00adters with 14 brid\u00adges to cross \u2014 one of them built annual\u00adly just for the mara\u00adthon. My best mara\u00adthon time is here: 4h 12\u2032; may\u00adbe the fact that I had to catch a flight to Brussels in the ear\u00adly after\u00adnoon was a good motivation\u2026<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=http:%2F%2Fwww.disi.unitn.it%2F~montreso%2Fkml%2Fsommacampagna.kml&amp;sll=45.427317,10.974002&amp;sspn=0.060779,0.141449&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;z=13\">Custoza Marathon<\/a>, May 2008 and 2009, 42.195km. My best time here is 4h 26\u2032. On the hills of Sommacampagna, whe\u00adre the Custoza wine is pro\u00addu\u00adced. In both occa\u00adsions, very very&nbsp;hot.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=http:%2F%2Fwww.disi.unitn.it%2F~montreso%2Fkml%2Fcortina-dobbiaco.kml&amp;sll=45.384552,10.773049&amp;sspn=0.12165,0.282898&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;z=12\">Cortina-Dobbiaco Run<\/a>, May 2008 and 2009, 30.00km. The race starts in Cortina d\u2019Ampezzo, and, after 30 kms, ends in Dobbiaco. This is the best race ever, bet\u00adween the Dolomites, two bea\u00adti\u00adful lakes, and the impres\u00adsi\u00adve and maje\u00adstic Three Lavaredo Peaks. 3h 02\u2032 my best time&nbsp;here.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Non-competive competitions<\/h3>\n<p>Well, what \u201cnon-com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adti\u00adve com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adtions\u201d means? These are races whe\u00adre (1) the\u00adre is no offi\u00adcial timing; (2) the\u00adre is no offi\u00adcial start; (3) the\u00adre is no check along the cour\u00adse to veri\u00adfy that eve\u00adry\u00adbo\u00addy did actual\u00adly com\u00adple\u00adte the race. In some of the\u00adse races, one of the big\u00adge\u00adst pro\u00adblem is that the refresh\u00adment stands are out of \u201ccote\u00adchi\u00adno\u201d (a kind of sala\u00admi) at 10.<span class=\"caps\">00AM<\/span>\u2026<br>\nParticipating in the\u00adse races is always fun \u2014 you can see all kinds of runners.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=http:%2F%2Fwww.disi.unitn.it%2F~montreso%2Fkml%2Fstraverona.kml&amp;sll=45.473133,11.039028&amp;sspn=0.06073,0.141964&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;z=13\">Straverona<\/a>, on the hills of Verona and in the city cen\u00adter, around May, 21km. Organized by Giovane Montagna di Verona. Best time in 2008, 2h&nbsp;10\u2032<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=http:%2F%2Fwww.disi.unitn.it%2F~montreso%2Fkml%2Fsgambada.kml&amp;sll=45.427317,10.974002&amp;sspn=0.060779,0.141964&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;ll=45.473133,11.039028&amp;spn=0.06073,0.141964&amp;z=14\">Sgambada di S. Giuseppe<\/a>, on the hills of Verona in Valpantena, around March, 17.5km. The hill-clim\u00adbing after S. Maria in Stelle is ter\u00adri\u00adble for your legs. Only in 2010 so far \u2014 run\u00adning in the&nbsp;snow!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Running around the&nbsp;world<\/h3>\n<p>Traveling a lot for con\u00adfe\u00adren\u00adces, work\u00adshops, mee\u00adtings and the like, I\u2019ve got the oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty to map my runs around the world. There were \u201cNo tre\u00adspas\u00adsing\u201d signs, but tho\u00adse are for cars, right? What I can say? Unusual run\u00adning com\u00adpa\u00adnions this time \u2014 mon\u00adkeys! And when you see the \u201cBeware of cro\u00adco\u00addi\u00adles\u201d sign, you know that it is time to go&nbsp;back.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=http:%2F%2Fwww.disi.unitn.it%2F~montreso%2Fkml%2Fcimirlo.kml&amp;sll=45.427317,10.974002&amp;sspn=0.060779,0.141449&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;z=16\">Passo del Cimirlo, Trento, Italy<\/a>, March 16th, 2010 \u2014 8.50km. A short run in Gramado \u2014 the city that you don\u2019t expect in Brazil (famous for the ger\u00adman archi\u00adtec\u00adtu\u00adre\u2026). A short run in the <span class=\"caps\">IIT<\/span> Campus in Kampur. Stay insi\u00adde the cam\u00adpus is my mot\u00adto: outsi\u00adde is ter\u00adri\u00adble. It was nice to see pro\u00adfes\u00adsors doing yoga and medi\u00adta\u00adtion on their gardens.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=http:%2F%2Fdisi.unitn.it%2F~montreso%2Fkml%2Foslo.kml&amp;aq=&amp;sll=45.452246,11.003236&amp;sspn=0.030587,0.068493&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;t=h&amp;z=17\">Oslo, Norway<\/a>, May 12th, 2011 \u2014 5.7km. The day befo\u00adre (sun, warm) I was thin\u00adking about moving to Norway, but rain and fog remin\u00added me why I like Verona and Trento. I ran in a small park clo\u00adse to the&nbsp;hotel.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=http:%2F%2Fdisi.unitn.it%2F~montreso%2Fkml%2Fstoccolma.kml&amp;aq=&amp;sll=59.927448,10.70897&amp;sspn=0.010924,0.034246&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;t=h&amp;z=15\">Stockholm, Sweden<\/a>, June 2nd, 2011 and June 5th, 2013 \u2014 13km. Wonderful whea\u00adther in Kista, both times! After a ran\u00addom run bet\u00adween the buil\u00addings, I final\u00adly found a bea\u00adti\u00adful trail in the small fore\u00adst clo\u00adse by. There were seve\u00adral trails, 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, 15 km; you see the 10km here (green). Roe deers, squir\u00adrels, rab\u00adbi\u00adts and very few peo\u00adple in the ear\u00adly mor\u00adning. One advi\u00adce: fol\u00adlow the paths, don\u2019t think you can get a sen\u00adse of direc\u00adtion&nbsp;there\u2026<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?q=http:%2F%2Fdisi.unitn.it%2F~montreso%2Fkml%2Fkyoto.kml&amp;hl=en&amp;sll=59.395201,17.956517&amp;sspn=0.021434,0.063429&amp;vpsrc=0&amp;t=h&amp;z=15\">Kyoto, Japan<\/a>, September 4th, 2011 \u2014 6.2km. This is a very short run, but what a sce\u00adne\u00adry! It visi\u00adts the Greek island of Crete as well as Cyprus. It runs paral\u00adlel to Samaria Gorge \u2014 which is much more famous but also much more pac\u00adked with peo\u00adple. I star\u00adted from the Imbros Village and went down to Kommitades, without mee\u00adting any\u00adbo\u00addy (6.00 in the mor\u00adning, thou\u00adgh).
